This research, carried out with Local Trust, explores what it takes to build genuine, lasting relationships between universities and communities, and what gets in the way.
Drawing on four in-depth case studies from across the UK, we examined partnerships between universities, community organisations, schools and public bodies that have developed over time.
Our report shares stories and practical learning for communities, universities, funders, and policymakers working to build stronger partnerships for place-based change, and highlights the conditions needed to make this work sustainable, equitable and impactful.
This research informed Local Trust's national learning event in June 2026, which brought together universities, community organisations, funders, and policy stakeholders to share good practice and explore what makes community–university partnerships work.
What Local Trust said
At Local Trust, we commissioned Al and Bryony in 2026 to carry out a piece of research and also to support an event – both on the topic of the civic role of universities. The project had a short timescale, and required Al and Bryony to hit the ground running, which they did brilliantly.
They produced a high quality report based on four case study fieldwork areas, within the deadline. They were able to achieve this thanks to their excellent networks and deep knowledge of the sector, and also their ability to grasp the brief quickly. Drafts were of a very good quality and Al responded to our feedback and comments thoughtfully and helpfully.
As importantly, they were a pleasure to work with. Regular meetings with Al were always informative and enjoyable. It was also very reassuring to have Al present at our related event, where she facilitated a breakout session. Knowing her integrity and expertise, I felt able to trust that her session would go well, which is particularly valuable when running a busy and multi-faceted event.
